Meals You Can Enjoy for This Independence Day!

With a blink of an eye, we have already reached August! For us as Indonesians, August is a very special month with the celebration of our Independence Day. It's time for us to celebrate with exciting competitions such as Panjat Pinang, Kerupuk eating competition, sack race, and others. However, it's not just the competitions that make this August 17 special, there are so many dishes that we usually eat on this Independence Day. Come take a look at some of the dishes we have! 

1. Nasi Tumpeng 

Nasi Tumpeng has become a champion dish for big events. However, we may be familiar with Nasi Tumpeng which is yellow for the rice, while for this Independence Day, Nasi Tumpeng can be presented with special red and white color which is identical to Indonesia's national flag. The red color is produced from brown rice, while the white is from ordinary white rice. The side dishes are almost the same as the regular Nasi Tumpeng.

2. Red and White Sweet Rice Porridge 

This dish is suitable for fans of eating porridge for breakfast. Although it is different from ordinary porridge, this dish can still fill your stomach if eaten before the Independence Day ceremony. The red color comes from brown sugar, while the white color is made from thickened coconut milk. 

3. Klepon 

After the two main dishes, we also have traditional snacks, Klepon. This sweet light meal is made from glutinous rice flour in the form of small balls filled with brown sugar and then boiled in boiling water. However, we can also change the color of Klepon from Green to Red and White according to the Independence Day theme! 

4. Telok Pindang (Braised Eggs) 

Telok Pindang, or braised egg are one of the dishes that is popular and easy to find in Palembang. The eggs, which are boiled for 5 hours, are usually mixed with spices such as lemongrass, salt, brown sugar and tamarind. This food was originally made and served to commemorate the birthday of the Dutch queen Wilhelmina during the colonial period. Now, eating telok pindang has become a unique tradition to celebrate Indonesian Independence Day.
